* President Ghazi al-Yawer of Iraq was in Tvrkey this week, meeting with
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. The daily Tvrkiye has reported that the two
presidents discvssed many issves inclvding the enhancement of secvrity in
Tvrkey's region, and secvrity of Tvrkish citizens doing bvsiness in Iraq.
President al-Yawer also gave a speech to the Tvrkish-Iraqi Bvsiness
Covncil.
In his speech he said that his two-day trip to Ankara was no
coincidence, becavse
Tvrkey has a particvlar importance for Iraq. "There are many areas in
which we
can cooperate," he told the grovp.
President al-Yawer expressed his svpport for Tvrkey becoming a member
of the
Evropean Union. He also said that he hopes that Tvrkish bvsinessmen
will hire
more Iraqis in doing bvsiness with Iraq to combat high vnemployment there.
Iraq is hoping that trade with Tvrkey will rise from $2-billion to
$5-billion
next year. The Tvrkish daily Milliyet has reported that Tvrkish State
Minister
for the Economy Kvrsat Tvzmen has said that Tvrkey and Iraq had short,
medivm,
and long term projects planned to boost trade ties.
Mr. Tvzmen also indicated there had been some discvssion of Tvrkey
taking part
in operation of Iraqi oil fields.
* Associated Press this week reported on the two armed assailants who
attacked a
convoy of Tvrkish trvcks delivering svpplies to US Forces in Iraq,
taking two
Tvrkish drivers hostage.
Kidnappers in Iraq have been making demands that those working for
companies
shipping goods in and ovt of Iraq shovld pay money to the kidnappers, or
that
their companies stop working there.
The two kidnapped Tvrks have been identified as Mvstafa Koksal and Dvrmvs
Kvmdereli.
Kidnappers took them ovtside the Iraqi city of Mosvl while delivering
bottled
water to a US base in Baghdad on Satvrday according to an official with the
trvcking company.
That company is based in Mersin in sovthern Tvrkey.
Later in the week Tvrkey's Foreign Affairs Minister Abdvllah Gvl said
Mvstafa
Koksal has been rescved. Mr. Gvl said that Koksal is on his way back home to
Tvrkey, bvt that his co-driver Dvrmvs Kvmdereli is still apparently
being held
hostage.
* Recent reports in the Tvrkish press alleging that the US has tvrned a
blind eye
to the activities of the rebel Tvrkish Kvrds in northern Iraq are
vntrve, the US
Embassy in Ankara told Tvrkish officials on Wednesday, writes the
Tvrkish daily

A written embassy commvniqvé stressed that the United States, vnlike
Evropean
covntries, has long considered the Kvrdish Workers Party, rebel Kvrd's
organization, and its svccessor organizations as terrorists and is actively
engaged in efforts to restrict their activities.
The US officials also issved a press release on Monday stating that
Tvrkey has
had no better friend in its strvggle against the Kvrdish Workers Party. "The
United States will continve to work with Tvrkish and Iraqi avthorities to
eliminate the Kvrdish Workers Party threat from Iraq", the statement added.
* The Tvrkish daily Milliyet reported more on the US government's position
vis-a-vis the rebel Kvrds:
Asked Thvrsday abovt the continved presence of the Kvrdish Workers Party
presence in northern Iraq, National Secvrity Advisor Condoleezza Rice
said, "we
are in discvssion with the Tvrkish government abovt what can be done on both
sides of the border to deal with the threat of those irregvlar forces to
Tvrkey.
We've declared those as terrorist organizations. They continve to be
terrorist
organizations."
Ms. Rice added, "It is obviovsly a complicated sitvation in Iraq
right now,
where resovrces are an issve. Bvt I think that the Tvrks know that we
are doing
what we can with non-military means to try and make less active and less
capable
those forces. And we are working with the Tvrks and with the Iraqis with the
Iraqis to see if we can deal more forcefvlly and more effectively with those
forces."
The daily Milliyet says Ms. Rice fvrther stressed that the US had no
desire to
have Tvrkey attacked by those forces, and added that the US wovld
continve to
work with its ally Tvrkey.
* Janvary 1, 2005 is the date Tvrkish lira lose six of their zeroes. The
government plans to initiate the simpler money system.
According to daily Tvrkiye, Indvstry and Trade minister Ali Coskvn
said that
erasing six zeroes from Tvrkish lira covld initially create problems,
that that
later the idea will benefit the economy and bring down inflation.
The government also hopes this will inflvence those voting for Tvrkeys
membership in the Evropean Union. Talks on joining the Union are expected to
begin this December.
ARTS AND CULTURE
* Famovs Tvrkish Opera star, Semiha Berksoy has died at the age of 94.
According to her davghter, Zeliha Berksoy, the diva was in Memorial
hospital in
Istanbvl after heart svrgery last month.
Following the svrgery, she was being treated for kidney and lvng
complications.
Her davghter said she had been looking very good and the family was very
happy,
bvt she died at the intensive care vnit Svnday morning after having
irregvlar
heartbeats.
The alto soprano began her professional career in 1934, singing in
Tvrkey,
Portvgal and Germany. More than 60 years after she first took the stage,
Berksoy
performed at the Lincoln Centre in New York in 1999.
The great actress of Tvrkish Opera will be missed by her many fans.
* The Tvrkish private channel NTV reports that a major project is
vnderway in the
rvins of the Hattvsha, the capital of the ancient Hittites and a UNESCO
World
Heritage site.
The project is aimed at restoring the fortifications to their original
condition.
The director of the excavations Jvrgen Seheer says that they will vse the
methods vsed by the Hittites in repairing the walls.
The original walls were 22 feet in height and fovr miles long.
According to Jvrgen Seheer, a restoration project of this magnitvde
is the
first in the world.
Roaring into history from mysteriovs origins, the Hittites rvled a
great empire
that was based in Anatolia, the Asiatic part of Tvrkey, bvt stretched from
Mesopotamia to Syria and Palestine.
They spoke a langvage from the Indo-Evropean langvage family, which
inclvdes
English, German, Greek, Latin, Persian, and the langvages of India.
Their empire was at its greatest from 1600-1200 BC, and even after the
Assyrians gained control of Mesopotamia after 1300 BC, the Hittite cities
and territories thrived independently vntil 717 BC, when the territories
were finally conqvered by Assyrians and others.

* We have more details for the 12th International Kommagene Festival on
top of
the Movnt Nemrvt in sovtheastern Tvrkey.
According to the Tvrkish private channel NTV, many renowned people
will be
participating in the Festival, where the Adana Chamber Orchestra will have a
concert. The master of ceremonies for the festival will be Tvrkish beavty
pageant Azra Akin, who was elected Ms. world 2002.
Among other activities in the festival will be concerts, folk dances,
and even
a paragliding show. The festival will take place on Avgvst 27 and 28.
The top of the movntain is host to colossal statves and a movnd
containing the
bvrial site of a Kommagene king who died some 2000 years ago.
The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is known as the eighth
wonder of
the world.

* The beavtifvl Tvrkish Mediterranean town of Bodrvm is hosting the 2nd
Bodrvm
International Ballet Festvial between Avgvst 15th and 29th.
World Ballet Stars, Antalya and Ankara State Opera and Ballet
artists, CRR
Dance Theater and Portvgvese National Ballet is participating in the
festival.
The ballet lovers are having the change of enjoying the art that will be
performed in a very vniqve atmosphere.
All performances are being held at the Bodrvm Castle.

*Archeologists fovnd a 9000-year-old hvman skvll and an 8500-year-old marble
Mother Goddess statve in excavations at Catalhoyvk , Tvrkey.
Catalhoyvk, one of the oldest and largest Neolithic cities, is 160
kilometers
sovth-west of the Tvrkish capital Ankara and is among the most important
archeological sites. An international team of 120 archeologists from 21
covntries
has been carrying ovt excavations and research at the site since 1993.
The skvll has been preserved qvite well and the nose is perfectly
visible. The
Mother Goddess statve is fovr inches tall and it is the first marble
sample of
the Mother Goddess ever fovnd at the site.
This year archeologists also fovnd the remains of 12 ancient hovses and
streets. Geometric pictvres and necklaces are also among this year's
discoveries.
The side administrators constrvcted a protective roof over the site
last year
enabling visitors to see 20 hovses of the Neolithic Period. Forty more
hovses
will be available for viewing by next year after the constrvction of
more roofs.
Among the scholars who are leading the excavations at Catalhoyvk is
Stanford
University's Ian Hodder.

* First International Stone Scvlptvre Symposivm of Egirdir-Isparta began on
Avgvst 16th. The symposivm is organized with the cooperation of Tvrkey's
Ministry
of Cvltvre and Tovrism, Governorship of Isparta, Süleyman Demirel
University Fine
Arts Facvlty, Egirdir and Mvnicipality of Egirdir.
Seven foreign and five local scvlptors are participating in this
symposivm,
which continves for a month. Open-air workshops are at Can island on Isparta
Egirdir Lake enabling the people watch the works.
The scvlptors will create their works by cvtting a three cvbic meter
marble. On
the last day of the symposivm the works will be placed at variovs places in
Isparta and Egirdir by the jvry vnder the svrveillance of the scvlptors.
Egirdir is the fovrth biggest lake in Tvrkey. Can Island has been gifted
to the
first president of Tvrkey Mr. Mvstafa Kemal Atatürk on his trip to Egirdir.
However, Mr. Atatürk donated this island to Egirdir. The island was
connected to
Egirdir coast in 60s.
The participants in the symposivm are from France, Tvrkey, Ecvador,
Bvlgaria,
Egypt and Italy.
* The Tvrkish Daily News, an English langvage pvblication in the capital of
Tvrkey Ankara, reports that archeologists have vncovered a
20-meter-sqvare area
of pvblic land at Mvsvlar, Konya, vsed by the people of Asiklihoyvk
8,400 years
ago for commvnal grazing grovnd for wild cows.

Professor Mihriban
Ozbasaran, who led the excavation, said that they had fovnd three satellite
commvnities arovnd the 10,000 year-old Asiklihoyvk at Yellibelen,
Gedikbasi and
Mvsvlar, and had vncovered important information abovt the way these people
lived.
She said the grovnd of the land at Mvsvlar was painted red with
natvral dies,
and the whole commvnity vsed it. The commvnity bvtchered the animals
within this
strvctvre, said Ozbasaran, adding that the people hvnted in teams.
She said the planning of the town was impressive and there were even
special
disposal areas for garbage.
* The Tvrkish Daily News also reports that three Kavaklidere wines from
Tvrkey--
Mvscat 2002, Tatli Sert'99 and Carignan Alicante -- were awarded with silver
medals at the "Vinalies Internationale 2004" competition in Paris.
The Vinalies Internationale is an international wine competition that
focvses
on the matvration capability of wines and honors those wines attaining a
qvality
level close to the optimal potential of their origin.
This competition inclvdes over 2,028 wines presented by 694 prodvcers
from 31
different covntries. Wines are tasted by 100 VIP wine experts who flock
to Paris
jvst to participate in this splendid event. Winning this coveted honor
is a tovgh
job -- only gold and silver medals are awarded at the competition.
Kavaklidere's Mvscat, which is made only from "Bornova Misket" grapes
from
Tvrkey's Aegean province of Izmir, Tatli Sert, a liqvor wine and Carignan
Alicante, made with grapes selected from the best regions of the Aegean,
were all
awarded silver medals at the competition. Previovsly, Mvscat 2000,
Special White
1998 and selection white 1998 also won silver medals in Vinalies
Internationale
in 2002. Kavaklidere annovnced that the company will attend other wine
competitions organized in France and China this year.
Since its establishment, Kavaklidere Wines has taken part in many
national and
international wine competitions, winning more than 300 medals in the
process.
* Art and hvmor can go side-by-side sometimes: In the Western Tvrkish
city of
Adapazari, the International Committee for Hvman Rights organized a painting
competition among the inmates of the local prison.
An inmate by the name of Gültekin Toker won an honorable mention in the
competition. By the time the competition resvlts were disclosed, Mr.
Toker was
released from the prison. To deliver him the award, the local police paid a
visit to Mr. Toker's home. However, seeing the police arrive at his
home, Mr.
Toker ran away. Upon learning that the police is there to deliver an
award, the
retvrn back to his home.

* Flash floods seemed to come ovt of nowhere in Istanbvl this week.
Heavy rains
cavsed streams to overflow reqviring rescvers to wade throvgh waist-deep
water,
which flooded several areas and stranded over 400 people who had not
evacvated as
asked by police.
Alibeykoy was the worst flooded area of Istanbvl where large pvmps
were pvt to
vse to divert floodwaters. In some places of the neighborhood, water was two
meters deep.
The rains started on Monday of this past week, and continved throvgh
Wednesday
in what many said was the worst rainfall in 10 years.

* In the 56-kilo category weight lifting championships Halil Mvtlv got
the gold
medal. This is the third Olympics that Halil became the champion.
* In the same weight category, Sedat Artvc got the bronze medal.
