While I would LOVE to sail the Solstice, that trip may be a little more
than we'd like to spend next year (understandably, but it is what it is!).
I'm very intrigued by the Spirit to Mexico, though. Love the ports.
Love leaving from San Diego. And love that it's an 8 day.
That gets my vote, although we might swing the Solstice if it works out
to go that way.
Peter and I would really like to finally make a GGC!!

Kate, while I am grieving for my husband who is critically ill, and also
while I'm recovering from back surgery of one week age, I have just a
minute to respond to this.
IMO, it's a no brainer. While I would love to do all three cruises, I
know that over 50 of the regular group cruisers have already booked the
February Valentine cruise on the Solstice. So, the Solstice it should
be. unless there is an overwhelming dissent from r.t.c.. There
shouldn't be any need for voting at this point. Just drags it out.
BTW, have the three travel agents agreed to host the next GGC?

Hi Kate, Thanks for putting this together and getting things moving.
Kevin and I both vote for the Celebrity Solstice and are already booked
on it. The solstice should be a fantastic ship and I can't wait to sail
on it.

My pick would be #1: It marks the 10th anniversary of the first GGC
(same weekend) and it finally gives longtime RTC denizen Susette a
chance to host.
However, as Ermalee points out most of the regular GGC crowd has
already booked Solstice. There's no need to have an RTC vote. If the
Susette's Viking group or Cal's group "wins" - does anyone really
believe that there would be a stampede to re-book?
Susette's Viking group is well established and fairly well known to
the newsgroup for many years now. The only thing that "winning" the
vote as the "GGC" does for her (or Cal's) group is allow advertising
in the newsgroup without cries of foul by the self-appointed charter
police. It's doubtful she'd actually gain significantly more bookings
- perhaps a handful - and it's unlikely that George's group would lose
any.
I propose that the GGC and RTC part ways. The GGC will happen every
year regardless (with or without the GGC moniker). It's well
established with a core group and everyone who writes about the annual
cruise seems to have a good time. It's simply time to put an end to
going through the motions in the newsgroup. The group no longer needs
the newsgroup to organize or sustain itself.
Back when RTC had its first GGC, it was a unique event: a group cruise
established by people who hung out together in cyberspace meeting face
to face for the first time after boarding. Rather than trying to find
a TA with group rates (not easy to do online back then), the newsgroup
formed the group and then found the TA that could offer the best deal.
Now such groups are a dime a dozen. There isn't a sailing on any ship
now that doesn't have a sizeable Cruise Critic gathering, for example,
rooted in the roll-call forums spontaneously established by
passengers. It's the original "GGC" concept in it's purest form, but
without the voting and the freedom to choose one's own TA.

Good Morning Warren,
Thank you for voting. I don't know what to say regarding "the parting
of the ways for GGC and rtc. I will let those more knowlegeable than
me (who has only been reading the group since 1998 and not going on my
first GGC until the one in 2002) to answer your post.
Anyone out there want to add comment on this?

We have already booked because we look forward to cruising on a very new ship,
love cruising with George, and know that there is going to be both great people
and a goodly number in the group.
If you are a diamond member on RCL you can be an Elite member of Celebrity's
Captains Club.

I vote for number 1, Freedom of the Seas. I am already booked. Freedom
class is a great ship for groups.

Which unfortunately does not get you very much on Celebrity. No balcony
discount. No Concierge Lounge. I have a balcony booked on Freedom
because of the $200 discount. On Solstice I would be booking an inside
and probably paying more than the balcony is costing me on Freedom of
the Seas.
